Environmental Statement

The outstanding performance of Gilco Lumber, Inc. over the past years have proven it is possible to generate profits and dividends from harvesting and processing these valuable forest products for the most beneficial use, while still safeguarding our important natural resources for the benefit of future generations.

Cost intensive, selective tree harvesting is applied throughout the forests under our control. All harvesting, whether done by our own logging crews or by third party contractors, is conducted to provide for the maximum protection of the environment. Our team of highly trained professional foresters closely supervise all harvesting.

Logging roads are carefully designed to minimize their length while preventing land erosion. Logging equipment, appropriate for the topography, is used by well-trained, state certified crews who receive annual training in environmentally sound logging practices.

Selective tree harvesting of the Appalachian Hardwood forestland reduces damage to secondary flora and helps keep the fauna habitat sufficiently intact so as not to interrupt the natural live cycle during harvest seasons. All selective harvests are allowed to regenerate for a number of years, before a new selective harvest is planned. During this regeneration, the species mix regenerates naturally and so retains its maximum diversity - a unique characteristic of the Appalachian Hardwood species.
